The purpose of this page is to try to provide a package of materials for the production of hi-tech components.  Hopefully it will save you time in deciding what materials you need to produce your own hi tech components.  If there are other questions that flow from these questions please ask.  Also take a look at the Hi-Tech Materials FAQs

Hi-TECH FIB FLYING SURFACES KIT

This list details what is needed if one wishes to build a Hi-Tech F1B wing using Free Flight Supplies stock components.  Reading, if this is your first venture it might well pay you to invest in one of my papers.  A good start would be No.9, Hi-Tech Wings - this is a 21-page presentation that I made to the 1997 BEFA Symposium at a cost of £4.00 plus post.  This will give you an idea of what the process is and help you avoid a number of pit falls.  Working drawings of my own flying surfaces are also available at £2.50 for the set.

This kit was assembled at the bequest of one of Free Flight Supplies customers.

Materials
The materials listed are extracted from my list and are simple set of alternatives. There are variations that you can make on the theme with variations in section size; it's down to personal preference. The structures are also tailored to be the suit my own models. Some variations have been made where my own preference could be considered as quirky! Cut to size materials are also quoted, once you are sold on the idea you may wish to consider the purchase of full sheets from which you can cut your own items. Finished shells are also specified, later you may want to consider making your own, materials for which can be found on the list. Remember that this list is for the hi-tech materials, not the other items. The requirements for other items are however suggested.

Wing
Wing Leading edge 2 x 1.00 mm x 1 metre @ £3.00 each = £6.00

Top spar centre 2 x Tapered spar 24" (610 mm) long 0.20" (5 mm) taper to 0.08" (2 mm) 0.021" (0.54 mm) thick @ £1.50 each = £3.00

Bottom spar centre 2 x Tapered spar 24" (610 mm) long 0.20" (5 mm) taper to 0.08" (2 mm) 0.021" (0.36 mm) thick @ £1.25 each = £2.50

Tip spars 4 x Tapered spar 16" (405 mm) long 0.08" (2 mm) taper to 0.04" (1 mm) 0.007" (0.18 mm) thick @ £0.50 each = £2.00

Trailing edge section 2 x 3.00mm x 0.70mm to 0.5mm x 1000mm @ £4.00 = £8.00

Capping 1 x 36" (910 mm) long 4" (100 mm) wide 0.004" (0.10 mm) thick = £12.00

"D" box shells - Centre panel 550 mm x 30 mm taper to 25mm x 0.1 2mm thick. Tip panel 350mm x 25mm taper to 20mm. x 0.12mmthick, weight 19 grams £45.00

Kevlar thread 22 lb test thread 0.010" dia (0.25mm) for binding the spars 200 metres £10.00.

The above assumes main ribs and riblets of 1/24" or 1/16" balsa, block fill in and thicker ribs will be required at the centre, tips and dihedral breaks. The spar web is full width vertical grain balsa.

Tail
Tail Spar 1 x 4.0mm dia x 450mm long £8.00

Trailing edge section 1 x 1.60mm x 0.60mm to 0.4mm x 1000mm £3.50

Cap strips quoted for the wing, other carbon items from off-cuts from the wing.

Balsa ribs and riblets 0.8mm balsa centre and tip block fill in

Fin
All materials are from those already quoted for the wing and tail.

Total cost of the package is £100.00 plus postage, part of the above can be supplied if desired, or other hi-tech materials can be substituted.

Bottom spar centre 2 x Tapered spar 36" (910 mm) long 0.48" (12 mm) taper to 0.16" (4 mm) 0.030" (0.76 mm) thick @ £4.75 each = £9.50

Top tip spar centre 2 x Tapered spar 24" (610 mm) long 0.20" (5 mm) taper to 0.08" (2 mm) 0.021" (0.54 mm) thick @ £1.50 each = £3.00

Capping pack of 10 1000mm lengths of 2.00 x 013mm cap strips = £16.00

"D" box shells - Centre panel 740 mm x 45 mm taper to 40mm x 0.16mm thick. Tip panel 460mm x 40mm taper to 35mm. x 0.16mmthick, weight 42grams £54.00
